WP Engine • Thoughts on the October 9 hearing on discovery letters
A frustrated judge ordered WP Engine and Automattic to stop bickering over discovery.
On October 9, 2025, attorneys representing both WP Engine and Automattic / Matt Mullenweg appeared in an Oakland courtroom to argue their respective sides of several discovery disputes. The hearing was excellent, not because of the outcome, which was fairly routine and boring, but because of the tenor of Chief Magistrate Judge Donna Ryu who was clearly annoyed at both parties.
Today, I’d like to cover a few key aspects of the hearing.
